Puglian Wine Exploration Part 3

Ristorante Cortesia Puglia Wine Exploration ~All About Puglia Wine~

Introducing Puglia's wineries, wine situation, stories and history related to grape varieties.

The third event was held at Leone de Castris, the oldest winery in Puglia, founded in 1665 and a producer with a long history and tradition representing the famous Apulian winery "Salice Salentino".
It is said to be the first producer in Italy to bottle rosé wine.

In the 1940s, when wineries in small towns in southern Italy rarely received much attention, there was an event that spread the winery's reputation throughout Italy.
At the heart of the story is a rosé wine called "Five Roses" by Leone de Castris.
Ordered by an American officer stationed in Italy during the war, it crossed the ocean as the first bottled rosé wine in Italy and became widely known as one of the most famous Italian wines in the United States. After that, it was sold in Italy under the English name "Five Roses" and spread throughout Italy.
It is thought that the image of "Puglia = rosé wine" was established due to such an event.

Cortesia always has this "Five Roses" available.
Taste it lightly while thinking about the first rosé wine bottled in Italy.
In addition, the white wine "Messapia Verdeca" made with the local variety "Verdeca" in Puglia is also recommended for its umami and dry taste!
When Mr. Piernicola Leone de Castris, owner of Leone de Castris, came to Japan and asked for this wine, he readily agreed, saying, "I would like you to put it there!" Now it is a special wine that is only available for our shop.

Both have a mineral-rich taste that is perfect for this season, and they go well with food!
